Both OKaJu and ORK are mandated, among other things, to examine situations in which children's rights are not respected and to make recommendations to remedy them.

Some of the recommendations are based on the opinions of OKaJu/ORK, while others are based on referrals from individuals or field visits. They are addressed to various ministries or public authorities as well as to civil society.
