The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000 was drafted to strengthen and complement the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child.

This Protocol is specifically dedicated to the involvement of children in activities of a sexual nature and qualifies them as serious violations of children's rights. It is the first text to prohibit the use of children in prostitution and pornography. States are therefore required to take all necessary measures to end sexual exploitation and abuse of children.
